What is CrossFit Kids?
CrossFit Kids teaches foundational movement patterns, giving children part of their recommended weekly exercise while improving muscular fitness and building confidence through constant, achievable success. The program is informed by research in exercise science, behavioral science, and molecular biology, evolving as the field learns more about kids and fitness, while always keeping things fun and engaging.
Like CrossFit for adults, CrossFit Kids classes are constantly varied, there's a consistent structure to each class, but what happens within it keeps changing. Classes are built on age-appropriate short segments, long enough to accomplish something, short enough to never get boring.
The teaching method is broad, general, and inclusive, meaning any child can learn, from a dedicated young athlete to a kid who's never exercised before. Kids will learn movement patterns for the squat, deadlift, press, and more, through age-appropriate progressions and games, using body weight or equipment sized for their age group.
Programming by Age Group
Ages 4-7: The focus is on fundamental movement skills, coordination, balance, and listening skills, built entirely through games and play. Kids learn the vocabulary of movement (squat, jump, crawl, throw) without realizing they're training. Sessions are short and high-energy, built for attention spans that are still developing, using bodyweight only.
Ages 8-11: Kids start building real skill, proper squat mechanics, basic gymnastics like rolls and hangs, and their first introduction to light, age-appropriate equipment (PVC pipes, light medicine balls). Classes still lean on games and team challenges, but with more structure and a growing understanding of what "the workout" actually is.
Ages 12-17 (Teens): Classes move closer to the adult CrossFit format, structured WODs, an introduction to barbell training with appropriately scaled loads, and coaching that treats teens as capable athletes while keeping intensity and safety age-appropriate. This age group often bridges naturally into our regular CrossFit classes as they grow older.
